CUPE 2424, Carleton’s union that represents around 850 administrative, technical, and library staff, held an information picket Tuesday morning in regards to ongoing negotiations with the university. Pickets were held at both the Colonel By and Bronson Avenue entrances.
Carleton posted a press release to alert students and faculty about the picket line and traffic delays that would result. They also said negotiations with CUPE 2424 began in July and are still ongoing.
“The parties have been bargaining in good faith and have made progress on many issues. Bargaining is scheduled to continue on Jan. 9, 2018, with the assistance of a provincially-appointed conciliator,” the press release said.
In October, CUPE 2424 members voted 93 per cent in favour of supporting the union’s negotiating team up to and including strike action, according to a previous Charlatan article reported.
In a past interview with the Charlatan, the union’s president Pam Griffin-Hody said that the vote was held after pension concessions were proposed by the university.
“We needed to hold a strike mandate vote in order to be very clear that the membership stands behind us on this issue, that we’re speaking as one,” she said.
In a tweet, the union said they planned to continue negotiations with the university as of Jan. 9.
Meanwhile, Carleton said it will continue posting updates about the bargaining process on the university’s human resources webpage.
