A Carleton faculty member suffered an injured foot after an OC Transpo bus knocked him to the ground Sept. 20 at roughly 1:30 p.m.

A witness identified the victim as political science contract instructor and PhD candidate Owen Temby.

"I was walking on a sidewalk, not on the street, and a bus came up behind me and hit me," Temby said.

He added the accident was so recent he wasn't sure what to do, and he would be more willing to comment later.

"I'm a contract instructor and I was hit by a bus. That's about it," he said. "I know it was an accident."

"A bus came up on the curb and hit a guy, and when I saw him he was on the ground," said second-year student Aman Nabi.

"I was walking towards the bus and I saw Owen standing there," said fourth-year student Cameron MacIntosh, who said he was in Temby's class in first year.

"I saw [Temby] standing there, and then I didn't actually see him get hit because there was a big crowd, but I did see him impacted somehow," MacIntosh said. "His bag and stuff are still under the bus."

Temby looked shaken but not visually injured. However, witnesses said he suffered a broken foot because of the accident.

"The chair of the [political science] department came in and said [Temby] got hit by a bus and was basically suffering from a crushed foot," said third-year student Jessica Chin, whose afternoon class with Temby was cancelled as a result.

MacIntosh said he was worried about OC Transpo's slow response to the accident.

"Nobody came for 10 minutes," he said. "The bus driver called OC Transpo dispatch. They have this new system where you call, and then they call you back. They called back 10-15 minutes later and then five minutes later someone was here."

MacIntosh said the driver called OC Transpo dispatch but not 911.

"If this had been more serious, obviously that would have been the thing to do."

Campus safety officers were on the scene inspecting the bus and speaking to the driver and witnesses.
