Dina Skvirsky, current vice-president (student issues), is heading up the “A Voice for Students” slate in a bid to become the next Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) president.

Skvirsky said her involvement with CUSA started three years ago as a “Drop Fees” campaign organizer.

Her experience as this year’s vice-president (student issues) and the work this year’s council has done speaks to why she said she’d make a great president for Carleton’s student population.

“We were on the ground talking to students, listening to student concerns and listening to what students wanted in terms of student life,” Skvirsky said. “So I think that puts me in a great position to be president and to be a student voice on campus.”

The fourth-year political science student from Richmond Hill said she hopes to accomplish quite a bit for the student body if elected president, including having student representatives on the Board of Governors executive to ensure a student voice.

“There isn’t a student representative currently so we’re looking to give students a voice,” Skvirsky said.

She said she will be holding a series of speakers to address issues relevant to students, including making sure there is a permanent U-Pass that works for every student. She said she will also work to establish an extracurricular program where students can take up a hobby of their choice.

“If students want to pick up their bartending licence or take yoga classes, or cooking classes we can have something to cater to whatever it is that they’re interested in,” Skvirsky said.

She said she believes her energy, motivation and experience make her a “great fit” for the position.

“My experience pretty much speaks for itself,” she said. “I think ultimately I would make a very good representative to be the student voice on campus.”
