Consent Culture Week, organized by the Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) and the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA), will take place Oct. 19-24.
Shannon Mulligan, sexual assault outreach co-ordinator for the GSA, said the goal of the week is to foster consent in everyday environments.
“The goal of the week is to . . . change cultural norms around sexual consent as well as to cultivate consent of the everyday (for example in interpersonal relationships: would you like a hug? vs. giving a hug automatically),” Mulligan said in an email.
CUSA president Fahd Alhattab said events will focus on survivors.
“The focus of the services will be around women’s violence and survivors of violent crimes,” Alhattab said.
Mulligan said there are key differences between this week and sexual assault awareness week.
“Having separate weeks is crucial to developing a holistic approach to addressing sexual violence,” she said. “What are we going to do about it and how are we going to work together to address, challenge, and change it?”
