The up-and-coming pop duo Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine performed at Carleton on Oct. 13. The show took place at Kailash Mital Theatre.

Elijah Woods (not to be confused with Elijah Wood of Lord of the Rings fame) and Jamie Fine are originally from Ottawa and broke through into the music scene through The Launch, a Canadian reality music competition.

“I think anytime you get to play in your hometown or home city, it’s really special. We get to see our friends and family and kind of be a part of a home crowd—lots of good energy,” Woods said.

VibeByMelo—Carleton alumnus Melo Griffith—took to the stage for the opening act and kept the crowd entertained and energetic. They transitioned smoothly from their opening song, a nice calm jazzy song, into a more upbeat rap song for their second song. Throughout their set, VibeByMelo enraptured the crowd with their rap songs and had the students pumped up for when Woods and Fine came on stage.

“You know when we first met, we clicked really intensely and really in a musical way,” Fine said, “and I think that was really satisfying for the both of us because we’d worked with previous people, the both of us individually, and we just didn’t connect on the same level as we did with each other, and it was instant so that was kind of a beautiful process for us and that translates on stage.”

The duo opened their set with their single “Better Off,” which they released back this past August. They then went into their set which included cover songs as well as their own songs. They would close out their set with their most well-known song “Ain’t Easy.” The song was released in January shortly after Woods and Fine won The Launch.

“We’re kind of two people who typically shy away from where do we see ourselves in five years just because we started off as writers,” Fine mentioned, when asked about upcoming music. “We didn’t even see ourselves doing this. . . I think we try to avoid kind of saying here’s what we are going to do in the next year or so, we’re just going to keep making music . . . we want to do it right.”
