Students will be able to check their coats and bags this exam season.

Scheduling and Exam Services (SES), Student Affairs, University Safety, and the Carleton University Students’ Association are partnering up to offer coat checks to students.

There will be two coat-check stations located outside of the Ravens’ Nest, which will be operated by volunteer student groups and available on a non-mandatory donation basis. Where previously students had to leave their bags and coats at the front of the hall, the coat check will offer a better level of security.

“The money would go to the student group scheduled for that day,” said Jamie Carmichael, the manager of Scheduling and Exam Services. The groups could then use that money for their own activities, she said.

Carmichael said the system would operate on a ticket basis. They would open up an hour before exams began and remain open the entire time, manned by the groups.

“They will be open an hour before, but most people don’t show up that early,” Carmichael said. “To combat congestion, we’re hoping people will show up at least a half hour before the exam.”

SES and Safety also hope to reduce the number of thefts that take place during exams.

“Since 2010-2011, there has been an average of 12 reported thefts annually from the Fieldhouse and Ravens’ Nest during exams,” special constable Mark Hargreaves said via email. “The estimated loss to our students was more than $28,000. These thefts occurred at the front of exam sites where belongings were left unattended.”

The two coat-check stations will serve exams taking place in the Ravens’ Nest and in the Fieldhouse.

Carmichael said she still discourages students from bringing valuables such as laptops and wallets to exams. But if they do, they will still be allowed to bring them to their seats and place them under their chairs.
