Women hoopsters make history

Carleton’s women’s basketball team is heading to the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East Finals for the first time in the program’s history.

The Ravens secured a spot in the final with their 68-46 victory against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Feb. 21. Guard Alyson Bush led all Ravens with 17 points, despite finding herself in foul trouble early on.

Ravens Nordic ski team dethrones Lakehead

The Carleton Ravens are the 2010 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Nordic ski men’s champions, beating out five-time defending champions, the Lakehead University Thunderwolves, Feb. 20-21 in Orangeville, Ont.

Golden weekend for Raven fencers

History was made on home turf,as the Carleton Ravens’ fencing team captured both the men’s and women’s Ontario University Athletics (OUA) titles Feb. 13-14 at the 2010 OUA fencing championship.

This is the first time both teams have won the championship simultaneously in the history of Carleton’s fencing program.

“This is the strongest team I had ever put forth,” said Raven head coach Eli Sukunda. “It was our year.”

Overall, the Ravens won seven medals in individual events and five in team events.

Na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye

The Carleton men’s varsity hockey team defeated the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees Feb. 9 in a thrilling 5-4 overtime win that had fans cheering to the end.

The game was a tug-of-war whereby the Ravens always found themselves a goal ahead of their local rivals.

Ryan Medel scored the first goal of the game when he managed to secure a rebound off of U of O goalie Riley Whitlock.

Both teams reacted to this with renewed energy, but it was Gee-Gee Mathieu Methot who would capitalize first, answering for Ottawa less than a minute later.

Defeated at home

The Carleton men’s varsity hockey team met the McGill University Redmen for the third time in less than three weeks Feb. 5.

The rivalry was clear throughout the game, and as McGill racked up the goals, the fighting between the teams became more intense.

“The rivalry’s getting heated and we’re getting close to the playoffs and I think you’re naturally not going to like each other after you play that often,” said Raven head coach Fred Parker.
