Ex-NHLer joins Huskies

A convicted felon is ready to play Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) men’s hockey.

Mike Danton, the former NHLer who spent five years in a United States prison after being convicted for plotting to kill his agent, has joined the Saint Mary’s Huskies of the Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey conference.

Saint Mary’s athletics director Steve Sarty said it wasn’t a hard decision to grant Danton his wish to join the Huskies.

Victorious but vulnerable

Cole Hobin may have only recorded two points in Carleton’s 99-53 win over the York University Lions Jan. 9 in the Ravens’ Nest, but he still brought the crowd to its feet.

Midway through the third quarter, after a Raven turnover, Hobin put his head down, hustled back and sent the crowd into elation with an outstanding block on Lion guard David Tyndale.

Hobin and Tyndale played against each other when they were younger, so they were certainly aware of one another. And Tyndale had a few words for Hobin after the play.

Victorious but vulnerable

The Carleton women's varsity basketball team opened the 2010 calendar with two impressive wins over Laurentian University and York University Jan. 8-9 in the Ravens' Nest.

Defensively, the Ravens were nearly perfect, holding both teams to under 60 points. However, Carleton also dominated offensively in both games, resulting in the two wins.

In the Jan. 8 game against Laurentian, Carleton held the Lady Vees to only 25 points in the first half while playing aggressively on the offensive side of the floor.

Ravens capture come-from-behind win over Gee-Gees

The Carleton men’s varsity hockey team started the New Year off with a bang Jan. 8, beating the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees 4-2 in a truly nail-biting game.

The Ravens came out hard in the first period, firing shot after shot at Ottawa goalie Riley Whitlock.

The entire arena was on the edge of their seats, waiting to see which team would get the first go-ahead goal.

However, after 20 minutes of play, neither team had managed to bury the puck.

Fencers capture four medals at CU Invitational

The swords were out in Norm Fenn gym Jan. 9-10, as Carleton hosted its annual invitational fencing tournament.

Friends, family and fans cheered on the Raven varsity fencing team, which competed in the men’s and women’s sabre, foil and epee events.

Head coach Eli Sukunda said he was quite proud of the team’s success.

Kelleigh Ryan, Jennifer Dunev and Brittany Vongdara came first in the women’s team foil competition.
