Ravens lose in exhibition against McGill

The Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team opened their 2010-11 campaign with back-to-back exhibition losses to the McGill Redmen last weekend in Montreal.

Ravens rugby team hope to gain varsity status

After dominating the Eastern Ontario Rugby Union (EORU) for years, Carleton’s women’s rugby team has dropped out of the league in order to kick-start a long awaited move to varsity.

Beginning this season, instead of playing other amateur club teams from around Ottawa, the women’s team is aiming to play against university-level competition, although for the time being only in exhibition format. Officially, they are operating as a “club running as a varsity team” and will continue to do so until other opportunities arise.

Swimming team demoted

For the second time in the last four years, Carleton University’s swimming team has lost its varsity status.

Jennifer Brenning, Carleton’s director of the department of recreation and athletics, said the swimming team is now being run on a “university club” basis by the Ravens of Carleton Swimming (ROCS) club.

Brenning said the demotion took place because the department does not have the resources to invest in order to build a high performance competitive program, as per Swimming Canada’s standards.

First-year swimmer condemns registration fees

Despite her seven years of competitive swimming experience and participation in numerous national competitions, first-year student Avery Zingel won’t be joining Carleton University’s swimming team after learning of the registration fee.

Zingel said she decided against joining the program after she was informed by the team’s co-head coach John Hawes of the $2,100 registration fee that would be required in order to be a member of the team.

Newest Raven gets taste of NHL

Joe Pleckaitis, the most recent addition to the Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team, took part in the Boston Bruins rookie camp last week.

Pleckaitis, who attended the Chicago Blackhawks prospects camp in 2008 and the Vancouver Canucks rookie camp in 2009, said he got the invite from the Bruins and hit the road less than a day later.

“I met with my agent . . . he informed me that some scouts from the Boston Bruins looked at game footage of me and wanted to see me perform,” Pleckaitis said.
