Quidditch campaign underway

Despite the rain’s constant drizzle, about 40 students turned out Sept. 12, broomsticks in hand, for Carleton’s Quidditch team’s first practice of the year.

Founder and coach Andrea Hill said over 200 people signed up for the team. Although the number of students who showed up at practice is far from the 200 on the sign-up list, it is still an improvement from last year’s 14-player squad.

Football revival on track for 2012

It’s been 12 seasons since the Carleton Ravens have lined up at
the line of scrimmage in varsity play.

Meeting the rookies: Devan Bruce

The Charlatan (TC): What is your best soccer memory so far?

Devan Bruce (DB): My best soccer memory so far has to be losing in the high school city championships this past year. The other team tied the game with 30 seconds to go and we ended up losing in a shootout.

Ravens women draw against Ottawa U

Throngs of Carleton supporters silenced the home crowd and helped the Ravens women’s soccer team secure a 1-1 draw against crosstown rivals the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees Sept. 11 at Matt Anthony Field.

Although the Ravens managed to earn a point against the fifth-ranked women’s soccer team in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) — on their own turf at that — the draw prolongs Carleton’s 16-season drought, in which the Ravens have yet to produce a win against the Gee-Gees in regular season play.

Sibling rivalry benefits Skinner family

In high school, Erica Skinner’s younger brother, Jeff, used to take part in her hockey practices and it really bothered the Carleton Ravens fourth-year defenceman to watch a once nationally-ranked figure skater show up everyone on her team.

“He was such a pest!” said Skinner even now. “He was just so much better than everybody else.”

Like her elder sisters before her, Skinner, 22, had made the transition from ringette to figure skating before eventually settling on hockey. Faithfully, Jeff, 18, followed suit.
