Recruiting key for Ravens
Many Carleton Ravens basketball fans got their first look at rookies Darcy Hawkins, Genavieve Melatti and Krista Van Slingerland last weekend, when the Ravens women’s basketball team captured their second consecutive Metro Glebe Tournament title.
For Ravens head coach Taffe Charles, this represents years of investment. Recruitment is not easy. Varsity coaches like Charles travel all over Canada to watch potential players play at the club and high school levels.
Metro Glebe champs once again
The Carleton Ravens women’s basketball team successfully defended their Metro Glebe Tournament title last weekend at the Ravens’ Nest, winning two of three games to secure the championship.
The tournament included three visiting universities: the Bishop’s Gaiters, Memorial Sea-Hawks and Concordia Stingers.
Undefeated in Laval
They may have claimed another pre-season tournament win last weekend, but the Carleton Ravens men’s basketball team still has a lot of work to do, head coach Dave Smart warned.
The Ravens swept the University of Laval’s Rouge et Or tournament with wins against the St. Mary’s Huskies, the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds and the tournament host, Laval. Still, Smart said he wasn’t thrilled by his team’s performance.
Taking the sting out of the Stingers
A week after crushing the rival University of Ottawa Gee-Gees 8-1 on home ice, the Carleton Ravens women’s hockey team was at it again Oct. 23, defeating the Concordia Stingers 2-1 in a shootout at the Ice House to push their record to a perfect 2-0.
“The team is gelling very well,” said Ravens assistant coach Mandi Duhamel. “The teamwork is there. Being 2-0 so far is a great start and a good showing of what we can do this season.”
Bucking the trend
In a season of low-scoring, nail-biting games, the Carleton Ravens men’s soccer team bucked the trend Oct. 17 in their game against the Nipissing Lakers, scoring three times in the second half to secure a 3-0 win.
