Commentary: Fencing wasn’t foiled at Carleton invitational
There is a lot of red tape involved with hosting a fencing invitational tournament, but not the beauracratic kind.
Red tape marks out the strips on which the competing teams fence foil, épée or sabre.
Some strips are covered by heavy copper mats, which act as a ground should the electrically sensitive weapons accidentally touch the floor.
Jan. 15-16, the copper mats covered Carleton’s Norm Fenn Gym, the location of Carleton’s fencing invitational.
Ravens can’t solve Redmen
The Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team’s quest for revenge was left unsatisfied Jan. 19, when they dropped their second straight game to the McGill Redmen.
After falling behind 3-0 in the first ten minutes of the game, the Ravens fought back in the second and third period, but it wasn’t enough to stop the second best team in the country from taking the game 4-2.
The Ravens were looking to recover from their 5-4 loss to McGill Jan. 14, but third-year forward Brandon MacLean said the Ravens didn’t compete the way they needed to.
Carleton quidditch team happy with inaugural year
It’s been a year since quidditch flew from the pages of the Harry Potter novels and onto the field at Carleton, and Andrea Hill, founder of Carleton quidditch team, said she was never sure the team would make it to this point.
Ravens nearly upset Redmen
After losing 5-4 to the third nationally-ranked McGill University Redmen on Jan. 14, the Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team bounced back with a 3-2 overtime win against the Concordia University Stingers the following afternoon.
Captain Brad Good notched the winning tally less than three minutes into overtime, giving the Ravens their 12th win of the season.
They currently sit fourth in the Ontario University Athletics East conference.
Ravens defeat Gaels, humble Paladins
The Carleton University Ravens men’s basketball team enjoyed yet another fruitful weekend on the road as they inflicted defeats on the Queen’s University Gaels on Jan. 14 and the Royal Military College Paladins on Jan. 15.
A narrow 86-73 victory over the Gaels in Kingston saw the Ravens build on their impressive winning streak, taking it to 11 wins on the trot. The Ravens’ ever-reliable power forward Tyson Hinz had a commendable game, bagging a game-high 24 points.
