Meeting the Rookies: Matt Dopud
The Charlatan (TC): Why did you decide to come to Carleton?
Matt Dopud (MD): They approached me a lot and I felt really comfortable with what they were telling me and they seemed like they really wanted me. I like going to places where they want me to play, not just to try out. Also, it’s close to home; it’s only two hours away. I just felt it was a good fit for me.
TC: How much did the past success of the hockey program play in your decision to come here?
MacLean excited to don Maple Leaf
It might not be the World Junior Championships, but for Carleton Ravens men’s hockey forward Brandon MacLean, the thrill is just as big.
Carleton’s leading scorer was selected to represent Canada at the World University Games in Turkey in late January. The Canadian roster is comprised of the top players in Ontario University Athletics (OUA).
MacLean said he’s thrilled for the opportunity to represent his country in an international event.
Ravens fly to Ft. Lauderdale
While many Carleton students will be lounging around before the winter semester begins, the men’s basketball team will be using their break to train for the second half of their season.
The Ravens travel to Florida Dec. 27 for their annual week of long practices, intense drills and scrimmages. The Charlatan’s Brock Smith caught up with third-year forward Kyle Smendziuk, who shed some light on what the trip is all about.
Out of the water, around the world
The Carleton University Ravens women’s water polo team is celebrating a second straight Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championship, after they successfully defended their crown in Kingston last weekend.
For Ravens goaltender Evelyn Marshall, success came on a personal level as well.
Marshall was named the MVP of the championship tournament, while also taking home the award for best goaltender. But the Ottawa native said her experience in the water has brought her more than just athletic accolades.
