Hinz, Hobin lead Team Canada to Silver
The dream of winning gold fell just short for the Canadian men’s basketball team at the 26th Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China.
Team Canada brought home the silver medal after dropping their International University Sports Federation (FISU) finals appearance against Serbia by a score of 68-55 Aug. 22.
Third-year Carleton Ravens forward Tyson Hinz contributed 14 points in the gold medal tilt, tying Nathan Yu from the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds for the scoring lead among Canadians.
Men’s basketball team snags two wins
The Carleton Ravens men’s basketball team won two of three exhibition games Aug. 25-27, led largely in part by the return of Tyson Hinz and Cole Hobin.
After losing 91-81 to the University at Albany Great Danes Aug. 25, the Ravens bounced back to win 80-56 and 78-73 the following two nights against the St. Louis University Billikens.
Ravens football to hire operations manager
The newly revived Carleton Ravens football team will be hiring a manager of football operations in the coming weeks, according to Bob Rumscheidt, Carleton’s manager of interuniversity sport programs.
The manager of football operations will be responsible for “developing a support structure, a long term plan, fundraising, marketing and operations of the Ravens Football Program,” according to the job posting.
Former CIS rookie of the year commits to Carleton Ravens
Clinton Springer-Williams, a former Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) rookie of the year and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athlete, has committed to joining the Carleton Ravens men’s basketball team in 2012.
Springer-Williams’ journey to the Ravens took more than a step.
After being named rookie of the year at Brock University during his freshman year, he transferred to Gannon University in Erie, Pa. in 2010 after he was offered a full scholarship.
New varsity team for 2013
The recent announcement that Carleton will be reinstating a men’s varsity football team in 2013 also comes with the news that the university will also be offering varsity status to a women’s team in the same year.
Although many have speculated that this will be the women’s rugby team, Carleton’s director of recreation and athletics Jennifer Brenning said that a decision on which team will be chosen has yet to be reached.
