Carleton regains contol of Galleria

Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) accused Carleton’s administration of taking “another step back in providing space for students” in a press release issued Aug. 24, following a university decision to resume control of booking space in the central galleria atrium of the Unicentre.

“Just last year, the administration set up a Starbucks in the middle of that space, and now they are removing even more student-controlled space for clubs and societies,” said Erik Halliwell, CUSA president.

CUSA changes petition recall bylaws

Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) passed a motion to clarify the process by which council members may be recalled by petition, at the council meeting on Aug. 20.

The motion amends Section 2.5 of Bylaw 1 of the CUSA bylaws.

“I hope this clarifies the process and brings us into line with other student unions,” said Erik Halliwell, CUSA president and mover of the motion.

Students still demanding sexual assault centre after lawsuit resolved

More than 30 Carleton students and supporters rallied on Aug. 17 demanding the creation of a sexual assault centre on campus and condemning the university’s defence in a recent sexual assault lawsuit, even though a settlement in the highly-publicized lawsuit had been reached a few days earlier.

Julie Lalonde, the demonstration’s organizer and co-founder of the Coalition for a Carleton Sexual Assault Centre, said she learned of the settlement on Aug. 14 but maintained that the case was just a catalyst for the event so she did not cancel it.
