UPDATE: Instructor that replaced Diab discusses accused terrorist in class
The sociology instructor who replaced Hassan Diab for remainder of the summer course he was teaching told the students registered in the class that they will be discussing the controversy surrounding Diab as part of the class discussion.
Some students enrolled in the first-year sociology class that Diab has been teaching since mid-July said they are not happy that he has been replaced
CUPE condemns Carleton for ditching Diab
CUPE 4600, the union representing contract instructors and teaching assistants at Carleton University, sent an open letter to Carleton president Roseann Runte on July 29 condemning the dismissal of Hassan Diab, a sociology instructor accused of being involved in the 1980 bombing of a synagogue in Paris.
In the letter, CUPE said they are "alarmed that he was fired after he had already commenced his contract to teach SOCI 1002."
Prof accused of bombing no longer teaching
Carleton announced, July 28, that Hassan Diab, an Ottawa professor who was released on bail after being arrested in connection with the 1980 bombing of a Paris synagogue, will be replaced immediately in his teaching duties of a summer Carleton course.
CUSA condemns Public Sector Equitable Compensation Act
The Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) voted to oppose a piece of federal government legislation that allows pay equity to be the subject bargaining – which it said could negatively impact women’s equality in the workplace.
Kandace Price, a co-ordinator at the CUSA Womyn’s Centre, who was not present at the meeting due to illness, put the motion forward at the June 25 meeting. Brittany Smyth acted as Price’s proxy.
