Be Safe
As we move towards winter months, the hours of daylight continue to diminish. Those staying past dark on campus are encouraged to make use of the Safe Path; a route that outlines commonly travelled and well-lit areas on campus. This path is designated by yellow stickers on lampposts. Foot Patrol offers a valuable service and will walk with you past dark. Persons working late on their own can rely on our Working After Hours program, where you can arrange to have an officer check in hourly, and escort you to your vehicle once finished.
Breaking down Geomatics
Carleton’s department of geography and environmental studies and the Government Information Centre hosted the 10th annual Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day on Nov. 18. “Geographic informations systems are digital maps that link us to a location,” said Joel Rivard, a GIS data technician at MacOdrum Library. “Having these tools makes it easier to visualize these locations.
Dancing a jig for Louis Riel
Métis culture transformed the Unicentre atrium Nov. 16 as Carleton students gathered to sample cuisine, listen to music and celebrate the 124th anniversary of Louis Riel’s death.
Sheila Grantham, the Aboriginal culture liaison officer at the Centre for Aboriginal Culture and Education, said even though it was her first year organizing the event, she thought it was crucial to bring the celebration to Carleton’s campus.
The case for Zahra
“Justice is an abstract thing to me,” said Stephan Hachemi, the son of Canadian-Iranian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi who was tortured and killed by the Iranian government in 2003.
The final installment of Human Rights Week Nov. 12 showcased Zahra’s son speaking about Canada’s failure to honour his mother’s death or to return her body to Canada since her death.
Carleton Idols
Residence students got a chance to watch their peers strutting their stuff Nov. 18 in the Raven’s Roost. Sole organizer of “Carleton’s Got Talent,” Stephanie Brooks decided it was time to “give those talented CU students a chance to show what they are hiding,” and help the Ottawa Food Bank in the process.
