Calgary college gets an upgrade
Calgary’s Mount Royal College officially became Mount Royal University on Sept. 3, offering new opportunities for students but straying from the old college mandate of helping out students who didn't do well in high school.
“Mount Royal has gone through a 20-year transition from a conventional community college with a direct employment-related program base, to a more academically rigorous mix of applied degrees and university transfer programs,” said David Hyttenrauch, president of the Mount Royal Faculty Association.
MUN bans the bottle
Earlier in September Memorial University of Newfoundland announced it will become the second Canadian university to ban the sale of bottled water. This move comes less than six months after the University of Winnipeg introduced a ban last spring.
“Students, staff and faculty have been working actively together with the initiative to raise education and awareness around the privatization of water,” said Elly Adeland, water and energy campaigner at the Polaris Institute.
