‘Blackface’ costumes spark controversy
The University of Toronto’s Black Students’ Association has demanded an apology after a group of students won a costume competition for darkening their skin to portray a Jamaican bobsled team.
London transit strike strands UWO students
London Transit Commission workers went on strike at 12:01 a.m. Nov. 16, leaving many University of Western Ontario students struggling to find alternative modes of transportation to class.
Second-year UWO student Andrew Helt lives about 20 minutes away from campus. He said he is not too concerned about getting to class because of how close he is to school, but is concerned about paying for cabs to get other places.
‘Stop the femimenace’
A poster campaign on University of Alberta’s campus was launched after the university president made some controversial comments.
Indira Samarasekera reportedly said, “I’m going to be an advocate for young white men, because I can be. No one is going to question me when I say we have a problem,” during an interview on Oct. 21. Samarasekera was referring to facts reported by Statistics Canada that show 58 per cent of the student population in universities is made up of women.
Lawsuit pending in UWO arrest
New details have emerged about the mental state of the fourth-year student from the University of Western Ontario whose arrest last month went viral online in a YouTube video.
Campus police were called to deal with fourth-year student Irnes Zeljkovic after reports that he was acting disoriented and causing trouble in the Social Science Centre. According to a press release from the university, Zeljkovic went into an office and tried to force the professor to leave. Being unsuccessful, Zeljkovic then allegedly barricaded himself in a vacant room on the seventh floor.
