Canadian students learn to look for life on other planets
Are we alone in the universe? Does life exist on other planets? These are questions that students completing Canada’s first multi-university astrobiology program will endeavor to answer.
Beginning in the 2010 summer term, five universities across Canada - McGill University, University of Western Ontario, McMaster University, University of Toronto, and the University of Winnipeg - will launch the Canadian astrobiology training program (CAPT).
SFU student wins global entrepreneur award
A British Columbia student walked away with $70,000 after placing first in the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards (GSEA) for creating the world’s most popular lyrics website.
Milun Tesovic, a 24-year-old studying business administration at Simon Fraser University, competed against 32 other students at the competition’s gala event Nov. 19 in Kansas City, Mo.
Tesovic said he feels it is important for young entrepreneurs to be recognized by the public because it helps validate their work among older business professionals.
UBC may lose midwife program
The University of British Columbia is reviewing its four-year midwifery program to figure out if it can continue despite the lack of funding.
The program is the only one in Western Canada and currently accepts 10 first-year students every year. The other universities that offer the degree – Laurentian University, McMaster University and Ryerson University – are all in Ontario.
U of O Bloc Québécois group first in Ontario
The Bloc Quebecois (BQ) has had a presence for years at the University of Ottawa, student activists say. But now, they’ve made it official. The U of O is now home to the first BQ student club outside Quebec.
Their approval as a club went without incident, despite some controversy.
“We fulfilled all the requirements, which [are] having a club constitution in English and French and having at least 15 members,” said the club’s secretary, Marie-Soleil Ouimet.

Worldwide, obesity is becoming a rising epidemic and fattism is coming to light as a new form of prejudice against overweight individuals. Obesity is associated with multiple health complications and there have been efforts to combat the epidemic without targeting overweight individuals.
