A new plan from Prince Edward Island’s provincial government has the University of Prince Edward Island administration upset.

The province would like to introduce a proposal allowing other post-secondary institutions the ability to grant bachelors, master’s, and decorate degrees.  
Currently, the only degree-granting institutions within the province are UPEI and the Maritime Christian College.

The province plans on introducing a degree-granting act that would allow for the changes in the fall.

Aid opposed for Ont. foreign students

Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty announced a new scholarship program for international doctoral students Nov. 4. Vehement opposition form other parties in Ontario’s legislature has been ongoing ever since.

The province is planning to award 75 renewable $40,000 scholarships to international doctoral students, who will be chosen on a merit basis by universities, according to the program website.

Ontario will invest $20 million in the program over the next four years, and universities will contribute a further $10 million, the website said.

Visa applicants concerned over scans

International students applying to study down under will now have to undergo biometric scanning to help protect Australia from fraud and terrorism, raising privacy concerns from student groups— and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) says the policy could come here in the near future.
