New program aims to make university transfer easier

Starting next September, post-secondary students in Ontario will be able to take advantage of a new program intended to make the transfer of credits between colleges and universities easier.   

The government anticipates the new credit system will result in fewer students repeating similar courses at separate schools, according to a press release from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.  

The $73.7 million project is expected to take full effect in five years, the release said.

Ryerson student sues over health plan opt-out

An engineering student at Toronto’s Ryerson University is suing the Ryerson Student Union (RSU) in small claims court after it would not allow him to opt out of a $290 student health plan.

Mark Single said he was denied the opportunity to opt out because the student union “insisted that I must have comparable coverage,” in order to do so.

Universities in the United Kingdom are seeing an unprecedented influx of applicants this year as prospective students rush to begin their post-secondary education before tuition hikes in 2012.

University and College Admissions Services (UCAS), the agency responsible for managing higher education applications in the UK, published statistics showing a 2.5 per cent increase in applicants since last year.

Compared with the number of applications submitted one year earlier, over 8,000 more students had applied by Dec. 20, 2010.
