CFS in court with University of Victoria student union
The British Columbia Supreme Court will rule in a case involving the validity of a petition submitted by the University of Victoria Student Society (UVSS) to hold a referendum on membership in its national student union.
Representatives of the UVSS submitted a petition to the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) requesting a membership referendum.
This is in accordance with the CFS bylaws as available on the organization’s website.
UBC cancels controversial art exhibit
The University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology (MOA) has cancelled a controversial art exhibit featuring portraits of women who were murdered or have gone missing from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
The art display, titled “The Forgotten,” is a series of 69-by-10-foot oil paintings created by Vancouver artist Pamela Masik. It was called off Jan. 12 after pressure from some women’s and First Nations groups who found the exhibit offensive.
13 students arrested in Montreal for textbook photocopies
RCMP in Montreal have arrested 13 students for allegedly photocopying textbooks and selling the copies to several universities in the Montreal area, in violation of the Canadian Copyright Act.
The RCMP announced the arrests in a Jan. 20 press release.
