Hazing costs U of A frat
After a heavily publicized hazing incident last fall and several months of investigation, the University of Alberta has decided to suspend the Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) fraternity for the next five years.
According to a university press release, the DKE chapter will no longer be able to identify itself as part of the school in any way. The group has also lost its liquor and gaming license.
University of Victoria Student Society considers gender-neutral washrooms
The University of Victoria Student Society (UVSS) is considering the implementation of multi-stall gender neutral washrooms in the students’ university centre.
The school’s board of governors unanimously passed a motion Jan. 24 to investigate the cost and logistics of converting the main floor washrooms.
Tara Paterson, a fourth-year student at UVic and advocacy council member on the UVSS executive, put the motion forward.
University prep program limited to low-income students
A new university-preparatory high school in Welland, Ont., is causing concern because its enrolment will be limited to students in lower income brackets.
The school is temporarily located in Welland and will eventually house grades 6-12, according to a press release by the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN).
Discovery shows dinosaurs lived longer than previously thought
Dinosaurs did not in fact die out all at once 65 million years ago, according to an Alberta paleontologist. University of Alberta professor and researcher Larry Heaman announced that he and colleagues had found a dinosaur bone 700,000 years after dinosaurs were thought to be extinct.
Ryerson radio to lose licence
CKLN, Ryerson’s community campus radio station, is considering all options after the Canadian Radio and Television Commission (CRTC) decided to revoke its license, effective Feb. 12.
“Holding a broadcasting license is a privilege that comes with responsibilities and regulatory obligations,” CRTC chair Konrad von Finckenstein said in a press release.
