DNA discovery could help solve Amelia Earhart mystery
A groundbreaking DNA extraction project at Simon Fraser University could help solve an old mystery: the disappearance of pilot Amelia Earhart on her attempt at a round-the-world flight in 1937.
Health sciences student Justin Long and Dongya Yang, a forensics professor, have teamed up to extract DNA from cells in Earhart’s saliva left on sealed letters she wrote over 70 years ago.
Police investigating anti-women posters at Waterloo
Police in Waterloo are currently investigating a series of anti-women messages being spread throughout the University of Waterloo campus that have caused two student centres to shut down.
Posters were pinned around campus, placed over campaign posters for female candidates in the school’s student union election and featured a photo of Marie Curie, a chemist and physicist whose research in radiation led to the creation of cancer treatments as well as nuclear technology, according to CTV News.
Toronto cop offends with ‘slut’ comment
A Toronto police officer created a furor at York University Jan. 24 by suggesting women could avoid sexual assault by not dressing like “sluts.”
“I’ve been told I’m not supposed to say this, however, women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized,” Const. Michael Sanguinetti said, according to residence fellow Joey Hoffman, who spoke to the Toronto Star.
Sanguinetti was one of two officers present at a sexual assault information panel on the York campus.
Texas bill would permit guns on campus
Lawmakers in Texas are pushing for a bill that would allow university students and staff to carry guns on campus.
If the law passes, students with a concealed handgun licence can take their guns into dorms and buildings on university grounds, which is currently illegal in Texas. Anti-violence groups and university authorities have actively opposed the bill.
State Senator Jeff Wentworth, the bill’s author, dismissed criticisms.
