Flash Mob

“If I told you the location, it would ruin the surprise,” said Emily Hollander, a second-year psychology student at Carleton who is organizing a freeze flash mob in Ottawa Feb 12.

A flash mob is a group of people who get together and perform a spontaneous action then quickly disperse as if nothing happened.

The term coined by Bill Wasik in 2003 “was originally an assault on hip culture,” said Kevin Bracken, the creator of interactive public art group Newmindspace.

Chuck out of Hot Water

Chuck Ragan set the tone for our evening before even stepping on stage. We met in a dingy room in the bowels of Maverick’s nightclub where he offered me a Guinness and pulled up a tattered swivel chair for me, and a disintegrating leather couch for himself, using a rolled mattress for a footstool. Southern hospitality at its most punk.

In Edge of Darkness, Mel Gibson returns to the revenge-driven roots he occupied before an eight-year absence from the big screen.

The film is based on a critically lauded BBC mini-series, but the generic story and slight characterization make it tough to see where the widespread acclaim originated.

Also, as Boston police officer Thomas Craven, Gibson is not back to form.

Ice, ice baby

Carleton professor Jesse Stewart’s claim to fame will put rappers Ice Cube and Vanilla Ice to shame.

His outdoor music show, Glacialis, features musical instruments that he makes out of ice.

Using molds and blowtorches to shape, Stewart has drawn upon his background in sculpting to build numerous instruments exclusively out of ice. With these uniquely crafted instruments, he performs a 15-minute set of improvised music.

Two’s company, three’s a noon-hour rehearsal

It is important to remember why you started doing something, especially when you're still doing it years later.

For The Trillium Trio, this means the love of performing music – whether together in practice or in front of a crowd.

The members of the Ottawa trio, consisting of Cathy Baerg on flute, Joan Milliken on piano and cellist Steven E. Smith, are all experienced musicians and there is no doubt that their love of performing is as strong as ever.
