Loving that forested city

A mix of whimsical urban- and rural-inspired tunes with unique lyrics, Forest City Lovers recently released their sophomore album, Carriage, and are currently touring Canada and the northeastern United States. The Charlatan’s Courtney White recently caught up with singer and lyricist Kat Burns to discuss musical growth, humour and trains of thought.

The Charlatan (TC): How does your new album differ from Haunting Moon Sinking?

Bodies in Trouble draws truth into question

For curator Stefan St-Laurent, all it took was one photograph to help inspire him to put together Bodies in Trouble, the current exhibit at the SAW Gallery.

The photo resulted from a potent combination of elements: one person in danger, another who would risk their own life to save the other’s, and photographer  Rocco Morabito being at the right place at the right time.

Morabito’s 1967 photograph “The Kiss of Life” was St-Laurent’s muse when trying to get pieces to fill the basement gallery.

Film Review: The American

The American
Directed by Anton Corbijn
Distributed by Focus Features

The American is a throwback to classic 1960s films, with everything from the cinematography to the storyline contributing to the vintage feel. While not something entirely revolutionary, it is still, by far, a brilliant film.

The American follows Jack (played expertly by George Clooney), an old assassin who is — you guessed it — American.

NAC Orchestra prepares for classical festival

The National Arts Centre Orchestra is busy preparing seven concerts this month as part of the Mozart-Haydn Festival, which takes place Sept. 22-30.

The evening concerts, which will be conducted by NAC Orchestra music director Pinchas Zukerman, will feature music from renowned classical composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Joseph Haydn.

The festival hopes to celebrate the unique friendship between Haydn and Mozart, as well as their music, according to the event’s press release.

House of PainT brings down the house

A large crowd was on hand at House of PainT, an annual hip hop celebration that took place underneath the Dunbar Bridge, steps away from Carleton University, Sept. 9–11.

The event, which began in 2003 to celebrate the inception of the city’s first legal graffiti wall, brings together graffiti artists, b-boys and b-girls (more commonly known as break dancers), DJs and MCs — the four elements of hip hop.
