CD Review: Common Grackle’s The Great Depression
According to Encylopedia Britannica, a common grackle is a bird found across North America, known for forming large flocks and being a general pest for farmers.
Common Grackle (the band) similarly seems to have travelled across the continent to find original sounds and pop culture references to throw into a pot and create an album. Essentially, the album has multiple personality disorder.
Pixar: innovating one cel at a time
Though Pixar has become synonymous with the idiosyncratic shorts attached to the animation studio’s wildly successful feature films, its latest, Day and Night, innovated by mixing 3D and 2D animation techniques.
Its director, Teddy Newton, was in attendance at the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) Oct. 24.
Drawing from the inspiration of his old director, Brad Bird, Newton said he wanted to keep Day and Night as something more symbolic or abstract, simply illustrating the difference between day and night.
Carleton alum on the air with CBC
The new host of CBC Radio One’s show Bandwidth is none other than Carleton alumnus Adam Saikaley.
As a student, Saikaley hosted the radio show Rabbit Ears on Carleton’s CKCU radio station while studying classical music and sound design at Carleton.
Now he has been employed by CBC Radio for two years, filling in for regular Bandwidth host Amanda Putz while she is on maternity leave.
Ottawa gets animated
Five days of animated mayhem came to a conclusion as the 2010 Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) wrapped up with its closing ceremonies at the Museum of Civilization Oct. 24.
After many “thank yous” and “that’s what she said” jokes from OIAF artistic director and MC Chris Robinson, awards were given out to 14 of the 85 competing entries, which ranged from stop-motion love stories to logo-infused car chases.
Roger Waters larger-than-life at Scotiabank Place
“So ya thought ya might like to go to the show,” sang Roger Waters, the former Pink Floyd singer and bassist, at the sold-out Scotiabank Place concert Oct. 17.
