Michael Bourada dazzles in Fenn Lounge

Illusionist Michael Bourada captivated a packed house of students with tricks and magic Jan. 28 in Fenn Lounge.

Bourada has been entertaining audiences with his act for 18 years, and this performance wasn’t any different.

He started the show by making a bowling ball appear out of thin air before pumping up the backing Britney Spears music and vanishing a bottle of ketchup, his “favourite condiment.”

Bell Theatre packed for Frontier Ghandi screening

When Badshah Khan began holding gatherings for a sovereign India, only 50 people come to the first meeting. More than 200 people showed up the next time. And the time after that, thousands.

Despite Khan’s influence on India’s independence movement, his story has gone untold outside of India and some areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan — until the premiere of a documentary that was 20 years in the making.

Sarah Harmer takes to Bronson Centre Feb. 5

If you haven’t heard of Sarah Harmer, you probably haven’t inhaled the scent of rain or heard the strumming of an acoustic guitar on a summer night.

If you don’t know Harmer, I’m assuming you don’t know the joy of running through grassy fields with bare feet.

Essentially, if you haven’t heard of Sarah Harmer, you probably don’t have a soul.

Album review: The Decemberists’ The King is Dead

The King is Dead
The Decemberists
Rough Trade Records

It’s hard to describe the Decemberists’ sixth full-length album in light of their previous ones, probably because with its country sound, The King is Dead doesn’t sound much like any of them.

The album feels loose, almost carefree, like singer Colin Meloy and the rest of the band just recorded it on a whim.

It’s like they woke up one day and decided to make a casual, country-tinged version of their music.
