Sock ‘n’ Buskin presents Romeo and Juliet

For those familiar with William Shakespeare’s plays or those inspired by his works, Carleton’s Sock ‘n’ Buskin Theatre Company’s latest production will likely be a welcome trip to familiar territory.

Ottawa director channels his own disorders in Kenneyville

Directing his first feature film, Kenneyville, Brooks Hunter said he was just trying to make a unique thriller. He later realized he was subconsciously opening up the darker depths of his mind to audiences.

The 27-year-old Ottawa native explained the parallels he saw between themes and characters in Kenneyville and his personal experience with mental illness before the film’s Ottawa premiere Feb. 24 at the Mayfair Theatre.

Hunter directed, co-wrote and co-produced the film through his film company, Robanzo Pictures.

Album review: Radiohead’s King of Limbs

Radiohead’s surprise album, The King of Limbs, stays true to the band’s style, this time embodying nature with down-to-earth atmosphere and sweet melodies.

The album commences with “Bloom,” a track with choppy drum loops that continue in a sort of repetitive chaos. It leads into one of the most upbeat songs on the record, “Morning Mr Magpie.” Driven by funky guitar riffs, it feels like a hip version of a video game soundtrack.

Gillian Kirkland defies genre

Gillian Kirkland’s music has been called such things as “neo-cabaret” and “folk jazz,” among other things.

But when asked what she would call her style, Kirkland responded, “I think that is the worst question you could ask an artist.”

Instead, Kirkland said her music borrows from many different genres: her vocals come from a background in classical singing, and her music and melodies originate from her love of both folk and Celtic music.

Film review: Ryan Redford’s Oliver Sherman

Seven years ago, Franklin Page (Donal Logue) saw his comrade in battle, Sherman Oliver (Garret Dillahunt), suffer a head wound. He picked Oliver up in the midst of gunfire and got him to safety, winning a medal of bravery for his noble action.

Now, Page lives in the woods near a quaint, small town with his wife, Irene (Molly Parker), and two young children. He has lost all contact with his buds from the army and has moved on with his life. His medal is now cluttered in the bottom of a box and hasn’t been seen in years.
