Film review: Restless

Restless
Directed by Gus Van Sant
Distributed by Sony Pictures Classic

Enoch Brae (Henry Hopper, son of the late great Dennis Hopper) is a death-obsessed teenager who spends most of his time doing what death-obsessed teenagers do. He lies down and draws crime scene-style chalk outlines of himself. He plays battleship against the ghost of a Japanese kamikaze pilot named Hiroshi. And he attends funerals of people he’s never met.

Designers bring fashion to the capital

The phrase “Ottawa Fashion Week” doesn’t usually inspire much excitement. However, this year, the capital typically branded as bland, rebranded itself with a new sartorial identity.

Housed at the new Ottawa Convention Centre, there was a rampant feeling of elegance and regalia at the event. Guests enjoyed a panoply of designers’ spring/summer collections as well as two major international names.

Carleton grad combines architecture and fashion

On the final day of Ottawa Fashion Week 2011, Carleton graduate Rachel Sin showcased her spring/summer collection Oct. 1 at the Ottawa Convention Centre, a building she helped design.

With a bachelor’s degree in architectural science from Ryerson University and a master’s degree in architecture from Carleton, Sin said both fashion and architecture come naturally.

“After architecture, fashion design comes really easily. Both are very similar,” she said.

Building 22 designs come to life

Some of the newest ideas in architecture were unveiled in the basement of a former church for Building 22’s book launch Sept. 30.

“The book showcases the most analytical and compelling work from [Carleton’s] school of architecture,” said Benoît Lagacé, a second-year master’s student who contributed to this year’s edition.

The book came to life Sept. 30 as design installations and live music filled Saint Brigid’s Centre for the Arts, which was previously a church.

Shaken, but not stirred

The Enriched Bread Artist Collective (EBA) has put together a photo exhibit inspired by a vicious storm that happened this past July. Joyce Westrop, the show’s curator said the force of the wind ended up ripping off the roof of the EBA building.

The collaborative photo exhibit featured 16 local artists, three of which are members of the EBA. The event was part of Culture Days, a free public art event that ran Sept. 30 - Oct. 2.
