HOLAS hosts sold-out fundraiser
In its new venue, the sold-out Locura Latina fundraiser party reached out to more than 400 people in the National Gallery of Canada foyer Nov. 12.
“We wanted to switch up the vibe, expand beyond the student body,” said Carl Karamaoun, the president of Carleton’s Humanitarian Organization of Latin American Students (HOLAS.)
“This year, the diplomatic community [was] there, the professionals, [the people] who are under 19, and people who just aren’t comfortable with clubs.”
Wainwright charms the crowd
Even with a few false starts and French flubs, Rufus Wainwright charmed the crowd with humour and heart at the National Arts Centre (NAC) Nov. 12.
Wainwright came on stage clad in red and green plaid slacks, a knotted neck scarf and a red poppy on his vest. He waved to the audience as they exploded into applause.
He sat at the piano and dived into a rendition of “The Art Teacher.” His hands flew across the keys as he threw his head back and closed his eyes while singing.
Painting photos of sculptures
Anthony Burnham is looking at art in a new perspective through an exhibition that opened Nov. 14 at the Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG).
“I want to explore how we could approach paintings in different mediums, and [how] we explore today and make it make sense,” said Burnham, a Montreal-based artist.
Silkscreening art
Carleton students explored the versatile medium of silkscreening during the first workshop of its kind hosted by the Carleton Industrial Design Student Association (CIDSA) Nov. 12.
Students brought in their silkscreening designs to the Mackenzie Building studio and transferred them onto fabric. While many students worked with basic fabrics, workshop leader Madeleine Northey said there are many more possibilities.
