Carleton saw a 7 per cent rise in registrations for the upcoming 2009-10 academic year due to an “aggressive recruiting” campaign that involves a more personalized approach, said the Carleton administration.

“Students and their parents appreciate the fact that Carleton takes a personal interest in them,” said Beth Gorham, manager of public affairs at Carleton in an e-mail interview.

The registration increase encompasses a 7 per cent rise in Ottawa-area students, a 5 per cent jump from the greater Toronto area, and a 13 per cent boost among international students.

“The large boost among international students is a result of aggressive recruitment efforts, including visits to 240 international schools in 32 countries,” Gorham said.

She pointed out the worldwide recession and high unemployment numbers in Canada and in the United States had nothing to do with the registration rise.
“If higher unemployment was the chief reason for registration increases, then all Ontario universities would be seeing a boost,” Gorham said.  “This is not the case.  In fact, Carleton’s gains are substantially higher than the provincial average.”
