A number of Carleton students on exchange in France are looking to return home following the terror attacks that took place in Paris on Nov. 13.
Carleton currently offers exchange opportunities with over 190 partner institutions in more than 30 countries around the globe, allowing students to attend a university abroad for a semester while paying Carleton tuition and earning credits towards their Carleton degrees.
Although the academic semesters of French universities are still in session, a number of Carleton students studying in Paris are anxious to return home early following a series of shootings and bombings that rocked the French capital and killed more than 120 people.
“Anything that happens in the world does affect our campus,” said Suzanne Blanchard, vice-president (students and enrolment). “The departments are now working with the students on accommodating them finishing their studies here.”
Blanchard added the students in Paris “were contacted immediately” following the attacks, and Carleton has also been in constant contact with four students currently studying in Brussels, which underwent a city-wide lockdown following the attacks.
“Carleton is supporting all students who would like to return to campus from their exchange,” said Margaret Higgs, manager of the International Student Services Office. “Their academic departments, in collaboration with administrative offices, are working with each student individually to ensure they can successfully complete the remainder of their academic term.”
The Fall 2016/Winter 2017 outgoing exchange application was released to Carleton students on Nov. 9. Currently, 15 French institutions (four of which are located in Paris) are listed as exchange partners.
