Abdullah Al-Tutunji, a 20-year-old environmental engineering student at Carleton, was murdered at a McDonald’s on Meadowlands Drive on Dec 11.
Police say he was stabbed to death around 3 a.m. after a fight broke out at the restaurant.
On Dec. 12 the Ottawa Police announced that Jordane Larocque-LaPlante, a 20-year-old from Ottawa, had been charged with second degree murder and had appeared in court the same day. He was arrested on Sunday, according to police, the same day Al-Tutunji was killed.
The Iraqi Student Association of Ottawa described Al-Tutunji as a “kind and genuine young man with a bright future ahead of him,” in a post on Facebook.
Al-Tutunji’s death marks Ottawa’s 22nd homicide of the year. This is over triple the number of murders in 2015.
