Carleton is continuing to strengthen the bond already in place between Carleton and India by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with two Indian universities Nov. 4.
As part of the MOUs, Carleton will be collaborating with Teri Energy and Resources University in Delhi and Symbiosis International University in Pune, which is close to Mumbai.
Teri University is focused entirely on graduate studies in the area of the environment and sustainability. Carleton already has some joint research proposals with colleagues in this university, according to Carleton president Roseann Runte.
Symbiosis International University is a more-recently established undergraduate university that’s primarily interested in student exchanges, Runte said via email.
“Both are excellent, very modern, private universities,” Runte said.
Teri University and Symbiosis International University aren’t the only Indian universities with which Carleton has established partnerships.
“We have a dozen or so in India,” Runte said.
Carleton’s Canada-India Centre of Excellence in Science, Technology, Trade and Policy was established to celebrate Canada and India’s common commitment to education, the environment, health and science as well as a mutual desire to build trade partnerships and scientific and cultural links, according to Carleton’s website.
The centre officially opened during the Canada-India Education summit and the Innovation summit, which took place in June. However, the centre has been in the making for two years, ever since the Ontario provincial government and several Indian universities signed an agreement to work towards similar goals.
The centre will be housed in Carleton’s River Building upon its completion.
