Carleton hosted its annual Throwback celebrations from Sept. 10-17.

The week featured more than 20 events including academic lectures and talks, student alumni reunions, the Ravens Hall of Fame ceremony, and the Ravens’ Rally.

According to Ryan Davies, the university’s director of advancement strategy and brand, the celebrations are a way to unify alumni, students, faculty and staff, and also reflect on “Carleton’s impact as an institution.”

“Throwback is first and foremost about school spirit,” he said. “When we reconnect with each other, and we hear about all the good things people are doing in their careers and their lives, we learn about the bigger difference Carleton makes in the world.”

Davies also said the aim of Throwback 2018 was to look into the university’s future.

“Throwback 2017 celebrated Carleton’s 75th anniversary,” he said. “Throwback 2018 looks towards the university’s future and our ongoing mission to serve the greater good of our community.”

The celebrations began with a BBQ hosted on Sept. 12, followed by the Ravens’ Rally on Sept. 15, which featured inflatables, an obstacle course, food trucks, and a live performance by Junkyard Symphony.

Following the rally, the Ravens faced off Queen’s University Gaels at the annual homecoming football game.

Julia Pickett, a first-year journalism student, said she felt a sense of pride.

“It felt like a whole new environment,” she said. “I’ve never felt so much pride for my school.”

All rides and activities during the week were free of charge, but donations in support of Carleton’s Fund for Good were encouraged.

According to the Fund for Good’s page on Carleton’s FutureFunder website, the campaign’s purpose is to raise money for a fund that students can tap into for out-of-classroom learning experiences.

The website promises that Carleton will match every dollar donated.
