To kick off CUSA’s 2020 election campaigning period, the Charlatan is bringing you full coverage of the candidates campaigning to be Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) executives and councillors.
Each CUSA executive position has at least two candidates vying for the job, with the vice-president (internal) position seeing the most competition, with three candidates. You can find the Charlatan‘s pre-election poll here.
This year’s total of 13 executive candidates is a slight increase compared to the 12 candidates who ran in 2019.
Amid student concerns about CUSA’s slate system, the CUSA 2020 election has also seen a decline in slates—with only one slate currently competing for students’ votes. In the past decade, the only other election to see one slate was in 2018.
For the first time, over half of the executive candidates, seven out of 13, are running independently.
The candidacy for CUSA councillor positions has seen a decline from last year, with only 16 candidates running, compared to last year’s 26. In each faculty, more candidates are needed to fill all of the vacant positions.Going into the campaigning period of the CUSA 2020 election, there is currently no student running for the Special Student councillor position—leaving the position without a student representative.
Here’s a complete list of CUSA 2020 election candidates, according to the chief electoral officer:
