Four Canadian universities have earned spots in the top 100 of the 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), according to annual rankings released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University on Aug. 15.

The education standings have presented the world’s top 500 universities since 2003, and it is recognized as the most trustworthy precursor of university rankings, according to the ARWU official website.

The University of Toronto (U of T) is the highest-ranked Canadian university in the study, as its total score of 41.8 puts it in 24th place, followed by the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 37th place with a grade of 35.1.

It continued the trend of both universities being ranked in first and second place, respectively, among Canadian institutions. U of T finished in 24th place for the fifth time in the 12-year history of the rankings, but 2014 was its highest ranking since an identical position back in 2008.

McGill University placed 67th in the rankings with a 28.3 score, while McMaster University’s grade of 24.8 situated it 90th.

McGill’s ranking dropped nine spots from its career-high 58th position in 2013, and it is the school’s lowest ranking since an identical spot in 2005.

Since the ARWU was created in 2003, no Canadian university other than U of T, UBC, McGill, or McMaster has broken into the top 100, and each of those four schools has been in the top 100 for all 12 years of the rankings.
