How do you dress?
Welcome to the Charlatan’s new style blog, where we hope to find the answer to that question. It’s a fundamental one—what you wear is always your first impression for other people, but it also helps define yourself. It’s the easiest way to express yourself, whether you spend hours planning outfits or you throw on whatever’s clean. Like it or not, we all have a personal style. We want to explore yours.
It’s important to us that the looks we feature are affordable and attainable—student fashion on a budget. This campus is full of examples showing how to look good without spending a lot of money, including those featured here in our fall lookbook. There are pieces from H&M, Forever 21, Topman, Wal-Mart, Value Village, and more. It can seem intimidating for those with a casual interest in fashion, because it feels as though you need to invest in the top brands. That’s not the case. Grasp onto your creativity and you can easily put together something stunning.
Autumn is the best time to show this off. Before the bitter Canadian winter arrives, the fall months offer a remarkable opportunity to diversify. Use lots of colour. Layer intelligently. And do it, like the models in our video, without blowing your OSAP money.
Models
Jake Pitre: Entire outfit from H&M. Invest in some good cardigans.
Ryan Pickering: Hat from Lids, jacket from Value Village, sweatshirt from Mark’s Work Warehouse, pants from Topman, boots are Blundstones, and sunglasses from 39dollarglasses.com. Ryan’s outfit is all about diversification, effortlessly combining stylish accessories with practical fall clothing.
Alex Yamashita: Sunglasses from Joe Fresh, button-up from Sears, cardigan from Zellers, Calvin Klein jeans from Winners, shoes from Clark’s, and his jacket was stolen from a friend, which is always an option if you don’t like them as much as they think you do.
Duncan Chalmers: Sweater belonged to his great-grandfather, scarf from Harmony Crafts, pants from Winners, and sneakers from Sport Chek.
Kristie Jones: Scarf from Garage, poncho from Forever 21, shirt from Brandy Melville, skirt from American Apparel, socks from H&M and boots from Clark’s. The layering here is pitch perfect, and the outfit is made whole by the stunning poncho that looks more expensive than it actually is. It takes effort to pull off a poncho this well while incorporating so many other elements.
Natasha Grodzinski: Poncho and jeans from Topshop, tank top from H&M, shoes from Aldo, and hat was thrifted. Simple but clean textiles are something to look for in the fall—you’ll stand out while giving yourself the appearance of actually having your shit together.
Selena Chau: Jacket and shirt were thrifted, jeans from Topshop, shoes are creepers from T.U.K., and necklace is from Markitt.
