Unionized campus safety workers, represented by OPSEU 404, walked off the job and are taking strike action, according to Kyle Gallinger, a university safety shift manager and special constable.

Just after midnight on March 10, shift managers took over all responsibilities and Garda contract security guards have been hired and briefed.

“We are all highly skilled and trained,” Gallinger said of shift managers. “This will have zero effect on students.”

Michael Radcliffe is the co-ordinator of the strike committee and a special constable with campus safety who walked off the job shortly after midnight.

“We haven’t got a fair deal from our employer and unfortunately it’s come down to this so here we are,” he said.

He called the incoming contracted security guards “scabs,” a term used to refer to people who continue to work despite the strike action.

He said he hopes “Carleton gives us a fair deal and we can go back to work.”
