Brendan O’Malley is a third-year interactive multimedia and design student. He is running to be Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA)’s next vice-president (student life).
O’Malley provided his profile in an emailed statement.
Previous experiences
O’Malley said he’s an active member of the Carleton community, serving as a member of the university senate, Carleton Academic Student Government (CASG) member, representative for his program’s society, and vice-president of his programs’ society for the past two years.
O’Malley added he loves volunteering in the Carleton community through events like EngFrosh and helping out the student-run café.
“Any of my friends can tell you that when I’m passionate about something I give it a full send, all my time, energy, and everything I can to make sure it goes great,” he said.
Reasons for running
O’Malley was encouraged by friends to run in this year’s election.
“A few friends came up to me a few weeks ago and urged me to apply after seeing how involved I am around campus and in school governments,” he said. “I thought it was a great idea and here we are.”
Slate or independent?
O’Malley said his decision to run independently occurred out of circumstance.
“I decided to run as an independent for no particular reason,” he said. “No slate approached me, so the only other option is to go in alone and rock it as an independent.”
Campaign goals
If elected vice-president (student life), O’Malley said he would focus on community-building events.
“I want to try and not only organize more inter-school events, but I want to see if we can have at least one more big event in the year, similar to the Panda Game, that brings the whole of Carleton’s community together,” he said.
Final thoughts
Although O’Malley said it is important for students to vote for who will be most dedicated to the position, with so many great candidates this year, he thinks next year will be even better for Carleton students regardless.
“Vote for the candidate who [you] feel will bring the most hype energy to the events, someone who will really do a great job and give it their all,” he said. “Vote for candidates that are experienced, open, honest, and genuinely want to help campus.”
