A Carleton University student and alumnus have been identified among 63 Canadians and eight Ottawa residents killed in a plane crash near Tehran, Iran, on Tuesday night.
Fareed Arasteh, a biology PhD student, and Mansour Pourjam, a biology alumnus, were on board when an Ukrainian airliner crashed shortly after take-off, killing 173 passengers and crew members, confirmed Carleton president and vice-chancellor Benoit-Antoine Bacon in a statement.
“Carleton is mourning the tragic loss of two members of our community,” Bacon said in the statement.
“Our thoughts are with Fareed’s and Mansour’s families, friends and colleagues at this difficult time, and with everyone who has suffered loss in this terrible tragedy.”
Carleton’s flags have been lowered to half-mast and a book of condolences will be present near the Tory foyer Thursday morning for members of the community to sign.
