In what can only be classified as a sloppy summer shoot-around, the Carleton Ravens women’s basketball team fell 53-38 to the Ohio Bobcats on Wednesday night at the Raven’s Nest. Guard Nicole Gilmore paced the Ravens in the losing effort with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

“We’ve got some work to do,” said Carleton head coach Taffe Charles. “When we do execute, we aren’t finishing off plays.”

The Ravens struggled mightily from the field against Ohio, shooting just 23 per cent as a team and a dismal 6-for-31 in the second half. Team leader Stephanie Carr’s performance spoke to the team’s effort as a whole as the third-year guard went 1-for-9 from beyond the arc.

The loss was made all the more poignant by the fact that Carleton played its five starters, Carr, Abeer Farhat, Lindsey Suprunchuk, Nicole Gilmore, and Becky Leblanc, for 28-plus minutes each, while Ohio’s Dominique Doseck topped out at a team-high 17 minutes.

“We’re not where we want to be at at this early stage,” Charles said. “We’ve got to create lots of opportunities because we miss a lot.”

Carleton’s night started off with the Ravens falling behind Ohio 18-8 in the first quarter. By halftime, Carleton had whittled the Bobcat lead to six, but the second half doomed the Ravens.

Ohio managed to come out flying on Wednesday night despite the fact the team bus arrived at the Raven’s Nest late, delaying tip-off by thirty-five minutes.

The Bobcats shot the ball poorly (27%), just not quite as poorly as Carleton (23%), and were quite balanced on the scoresheet. Katie Barker, Quiera Lampkins, and Yamonie Jenkins all tied for Ohio’s team lead in scoring with eight points.
