Carleton University’s Board of Governors (BoG) has announced the appointment of Benoit-Antoine Bacon as Carleton’s 15th president and vice-chancellor.

Bacon will be taking over from Alastair Summerlee, who served as the interim president and vice-chancellor of Carleton this past school year, after former president Roseann Runte’s departure in July 2017.

“On behalf of the Carleton University community, I am very pleased that our comprehensive search process identified a leader of Benoit’s caliber,’’ said Chris Carruthers, chair of the BoG, in a press release from Carleton.

Bacon’s appointment comes after a year-long international search process by the university, according to the press release.

Bacon currently serves as provost and vice-principal (academic) at Queen’s University, where he has worked since 2016. Before his time at Queen’s, he also served as provost and vice-president (academic affairs) at Concordia University for three years. His first academic appointment was at Bishop’s University, where he served in a number of leadership positions.

“I look forward to working with the whole community to leverage Carleton’s many outstanding strengths and to further enhance the institution’s relevance and impact nationally and internationally,” Bacon said in the press release.

Bacon will begin his five-year appointment on July 1.
