Well, the air is getting crisp, the leaves are changing colors, the school stress is kicking in and the summer blockbusters are coming to a close. Here are a bunch of movies you can watch to put off that studying.
Let’s kick off the list with Andy Muschietti’s adaptation of Stephen King’s It. The film hit theatres on Sept. 8, and is already looking extremely promising. Bill Skarsgård plays the terrifying Pennywise the Clown who haunts and murders the children in the state of Maine.
On Sept. 15, Darren Aronofsky’s thriller Mother! comes out, starring Jennifer Lawrence. Mother! is a psychological twist on the loving care and dedicated devotion of motherhood. Also on Sept. 15, Kingsman: The Golden Circle hits theatres, promising an action-packed continuation to Kingsman: The Secret Service.
The LEGO Ninjago Movie, directed by Charlie Bean, comes out on Sept. 22 and hopefully will generate more money than LEGO Batman did.
On a serious note, Jake Gyllenhaal portrays Jeff Bauman, a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing who later became a figure for hope in the aftermath of the tragedy. Stronger hits theatres on Sept. 22 and this drama should not be missed.
On Sept. 22, Steve Carell and Emma Stone reunite again to star in Battle of the Sexes, portraying tennis champions Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. Their tennis match in 1973 served up a big discussion of gender equality.
If none of these films so far have caught your attention, Tom Cruise is coming out with a film about drugs and crime called American Made on Sept. 29. Apparently, Tom Cruise flies a plane himself in the flick, so he may be worth paying the admission fee this time.
October starts off with an intense thriller, The Mountain Between Us, which is an adaptation of Charles Martin’s novel of the same name. Idris Elba and Kate Winslet play characters who are stranded after a plane crash and must brave the extreme elements together with nothing but the shirts on their backs and determination in their hearts.
The Bronies out there should put their hooves together for the film adaptation of My Little Pony: The Movie directed by Jayson Thiessen. Apparently Twilight Sparkle has to save Ponyville, so cle Oct. 6 on your calendar for this one.
Dean Devlin’s film Geostorm comes out on Oct. 20, reflecting the state our world is in now. In the film, Earth becomes overrun with natural disasters, forcing scientists to alter the storms of the world. As expected, it doesn’t end well.
To heat things up a bit, Joseph Kosinski’s Only The Brave tells the true story of the Yarnell Hill wildfire in Prescott, AZ. The Granite Mountain Hotshots, a single local firefighting unit braves the wildfire and puts their own safety on the line to save thousands of lives. Check this film out on Oct. 20.
To end October off, the Spierig brothers are coming out with Jigsaw, the eighth (and possibly) final installment in the franchise. Jigsaw is leaving his trail of bodies each with a uniquely personal yet horrifying demise. Police are forced to look for the killer known as Jigsaw again, hoping to end his murdering spree. Check out this terrifying and bloody film, starting on Oct. 27.
These films are just a taste of what September and October has to offer. In these next two months of deadlines, essays and presentations, take a break with a film or two. You won’t regret it! Happy movie watching, Carleton.
