When the Ravens women’s hockey team begins their 2009-2010 season, they will have a new head coach at the helm.

Shelley Coolidge has been hired into the full-time coaching position.

She replaces 2008-2009 women’s hockey coach Jean-Francois Messier, who stepped into the position last August when the previous coach had to leave the position for family reasons. Because of time constraints, it was decided at the time that Messier, a former assistant coach and strength and conditioning coach, would hold the position for the season, after which there would be an open competition for the position.

Bob Rumscheidt, manager of interuniversity programs at Carleton Athletics, said over 40 resumes came in.

Coolidge was ultimately chosen because of her extensive experience, he said. She has spent the past six seasons as the head coach for the women’s hockey program at the University of Ottawa.

“That she’s been a head coach at this level for six years was something that separated her,” said
Rumscheidt. “She has a lot to offer, not only on ice, but in the overall development of players – not just on ice, but off ice as well.”
