In a Feb. 8-9 referendum, Carleton students voted in favour of paying an extra $25 per year to fund the construction of a new fitness centre, according to Jennifer Brenning, Carleton’s director of recreation and athletics.
Of the 3,825 ballots cast, 71.3 per cent of students voted in favour of the increased fee and all polls had more “Yes” votes than “No” votes, according to the ombudsman’s office.
Effective 2013-2014, full-time students will pay $88.30 per term for the new 11,000 square foot fitness centre. Students currently pay $75.80 per term in athletics fees for the existing 5,700 square foot centre. The fee increase would also eliminate the $26.50 per term optional cardio room fee.
Construction is planned to begin in the summer of 2012 and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2013, Brenning said.
