Carleton’s department of recreation and athletics has created a new contest this year for students to coincide with the varsity season, according to athletics marketing manager Romy Nehme.
“Get QRazy For Free Tuition” runs until February to help raise school spirit for the entire season.
At every game, there will be QR codes students can scan with their smartphone, or write down the URL if they have a regular phone, and they will accumulate points based on attendance and their enthusiasm as fans.
“This contest is larger then the athletics department,” Nehme said. “We would like to see the school spirit momentum carrying on into the school season in order to raise attention to our teams. We want to celebrate our exceptional athletes and help them on our home courts.”
Although this contest directly benefits students, Nehme said the goal of the contest is to bring students out to every game, specifically the “themed nights” where individuals can earn more points.
The points will be accumulated on a leadership board on Facebook and in February the top 10 will battle it out for the final prize of free tuition, or $5,000 in cash.
“The athletics department has found in the past that school spirit is in full circle for the first month or so, but it never transpires throughout the whole season. This contest is to help create a ‘red’ movement,” Romy said.
