Anti-Semitic graffiti was discovered in the second-floor men’s bathroom in Residence Commons March 2, an incident campus safety is calling a hate crime.

IlanOrzy, a first-year political science student at Carleton, said he discovered the racial slurs around 8:30 a.m. He said the message was inscribed in orange marker and read “Kill the Jews slowly + painfully.” Below the inscription was written “Nuke Israel” in the same coloured marker. A Jewish citizen himself, Orzy said he was very offended by the racial act.

“I think it was put there for the sole purpose of making people like me just feel badly about what they believe in and I hate that the school has stuff like this going on,” Orzy said.

Len Boudreault, director of university safety, said the “symbol of intolerance” was considered a hate crime and was turned over to Ottawa police. The police said the scene was cleaned up before they arrived.

The individuals responsible are not connected to any groups on campus, Boudreault said, and the incident had no relation to Israeli Apartheid Week.

But Orzy said he thought the act was “a blatant attempt to try and do what Israeli Apartheid Week tried to accomplish.”

Security camera images of those responsible are currently being reviewed, Boudreault said.
