I’m excited to be running as a journalism councillor candidate on a platform of transparency and accountability! Other platform points include the popular opinion that we need a microwave in River Building. It would be convenient and safer if students didn’t have to walk to Loeb or UC to warm up food, especially at night.
Also, making the journalism lounge more accessible should be a priority. It’s a great study space, and it being closed so early makes it harder for students to study conveniently. Improving academic experiences also includes ensuring students have access to important student services, like SASC. Journalism students deserve access to all resources available on campus, and barring us from SASC doesn’t give us that. This especially affects people who can’t go in for advice about other major, minor, or program elements.
One thing that makes me stand out is that I value accountability, so I’ve chosen to remain impartial about the executive campaign. This means if elected, I won’t have to answer to anyone later on and I won’t be a mouthpiece, but a representative of journalism. I’m running to make sure CUSA works for journalism, not that I’m working for CUSA. For transparency, I also plan to advocate for an open and transparent process around the resignation/replacement of a councillor. As we learned first hand this year, when the majority are clueless about a change, it isn’t open or accessible, regardless of it being ‘done by the books.’
A bit about me: I’ve had 2 years of experience as a student trustee on the Avon Maitland District School Board when I was in high school, as well as experience in politics, having worked on both the Hill and in the federal office of the NDP.
Around campus, I’ve worked as a student fundraiser, which allowed me to learn about things about Carleton that I otherwise would never have known. I spent my year in residence as a residence tour guide, and just this past semester, I had the privilege for being a Supervillian frosh facil. These experiences have given me such a love for Carleton, and an appreciation of all the people who attend here, and I want to bring that to the CUSA table.
